Using This Toolkit
This toolkit is designed to offer a multidisciplinary approach to improvement, drawing on strategic planning, service design and quality improvement tools. The toolkit provides:
- Descriptions of the tools
- Guidance on their use
- How these can be used for adapting and implementing the mental health and substance use exemplar protocol
- Links to templates
The toolkit also provides links for programme outputs from the Mental Health and Substance Use: Improving Our Response programme, reports and additional information of relevance.

Further Guidance
Understanding of your current system is crucial step in preparing for improvement work. The tools outlined in the following sections will assist you with the different stages of your improvement journey, from gaining insight and understanding of your system, to deciding which tools best suit the work you plan to do, testing your ideas and embedding new practices. The following sections are divided into three categories:
Use of the tools is not intended to be a linear process and will be defined and determined by the needs of your service and where you are in your improvement journey. The tools can also be used in isolation, combination or sequentially depending on your needs and the needs of your system. The MHSU Protocol team can offer advice and guidance on the best use of the tools described in the toolkit.
