About “How Might We” statements
“How might we” statements enable conversations around turning ideas into opportunities for improvement. They best suit when there has been prior engagement and discovery activities conducted. Enough data should have been gathered and analysed from several lenses. This will enable clarity around what the problem areas are.
“How Might We” templates support a two-stage process of identifying and articulating change ideas. Outputs and learning from previous engagement can support this exercise. These might include personas, journey mapping, process mapping or interconnected systems mapping.

When looking at adapting and implementing a local protocol, this tool can:
- Support ideas generation around what improvements to make
- Support ideas generation around how to achieve these improvements
- Help identify areas where there might be challenges to achieving stated goals
- Allow for advance mitigation or problem solving
